The Present “SULUR” town situated
on Coimbatore – TrichyRoad , 20 Km away from Coimbatore on Eastern Side. Sulur
is once famous for Pan Leaves, Cotton and Cotton based industries grown up in
this area.
Sri Thaiyal Nayaki Sametha Sri Vaidyanatha Swamy Temple is located
on northern part of a Sulur on Railway Feeder Road, the road connecting
Avinashi and Trichy Roads. Temple is also lies between the PERIYAKULAM (Big
Pond) and CHIZIYAKULAM (Small Pond) otherwise can say always surrounded by
water. River “NOYYAL” is running near by. Temple is at present
controlled by Hindu Religion and Endowment Department of Government
of TamilNadu.
There are two Vaidyanatha Swamy Temples are famous in the
Country. One situated at “PARELYAM” AT Maharashtra, one amongst twelve
Jyothirlingas and another at "Sri vaideeswaran kovil",
the name itself on the name of the Main Deity in Nagai District of TamilNadu.
We may say the third one is our Temple. The term “Vaideeswarar “
devotes in simple term as Doctor for Curing illness.
If we go in brief about the history of the temple, the
book “CHOLAN PUVAPATTAIYAM” published during 1950 by
Government of Madras oriental manuscript Library, Madras, under the authority
of Government of Madras reveals that ibid temple was one amongst the 36 Temples
constructed for Lord Siva by Chola Kings in earlier “KONGU NADU” Sulur
was earlier within the periphely of“VAYARAIKA NADU” and called
as “SURALUR ARIYAPIRATY NALLUR”during 9th century by Cholas and “SURALUR
SUNDARA PANDIYA NALLUR”during 13th century by Pandiyas. This Suralur was
earlier situated in the"RAJAKESARI PERU VAZHI”, the road connected
Tanjore and Palghat which was reland by First Aditya Chola. The “ThillaiThanam” Hone
inscriptions confirmed the same.
It is our unluck that exact period of the construction of the
temples is unknown since no stone inscription/ copper-plates/ Epigraphy/
paleography is available. However, we can ascertained that our
temple was constructed by Chola King as per above said publication.
The CholaKing found the “VaidyaLingam” while cleaning
the area which formed on its own as “SUYAMBU LINGAM” and
constructed temple thereto. After consecration of Gold Coins etc., for
continuous Poojas to be performed at the temple. The temple constructed by
bricks initially was later converted to stone temple “KATTALI”. The
present sanctum sanctorum is of Kattali type.
The
temple was renovated in the year 1973 by constructing a big Mandapam. Later
again during 1993 and latest by 2006 the consectation was performed. Magazine
published on account of 1973 Kumbabhisekham enumerates the details of the
management committee of the temple existing since 1911.
There
are two entrances for the temple one at south and other at east. Outside the
temple and infront of the east entrance “Dwajasthamba “ is
located and Lord Vinayaga located under big banyan tree. In “Dwajasthambam”
Lord Dhanvantri with “Amirthakalash positioned and facing towards North. Lord
Dhanvantri is MahaVishnu Roopam. Both Vaideeshwarar and Dhanvantri are Masters
of Medicines in curing ailments, those who are praying these Deities will
definitely get relief from their prolonged illness. In no temples, such an
amazement will occur.
